Historic New Bern
New Bern offers a variety of cultural, educational and historical attractions, tours and recreational opportunities for adults and children. There’s always plenty to see and do: museums, parks, galleries, gift shops, marinas and more!New Bern's origins...
New Bern was founded by Baron Christopher de Graffenried from Bern, Switzerland, who immediately named our town “New Bern.” Adoption of the Bern arms, depicting the bear, is indicative of our Mother-Daughter city relationship. We’re proud of our Swiss heritage along with the distinctive influence of other countries and cultures.
Our diversity and prolific history make us unique. New Bern's charming Downtown is an attraction in itself. From the residential district with its stately homes and distinctive architecture to the thriving shops and businesses, Downtown New Bern is a hub of activity. Nestled between two scenic rivers, the area is walkable, intimate and captivating. Downtown revitalization as well as preservation efforts are blended to create an appealing downtown today.
